Hong Kong firm loses $4.9 billion in one day

Thomas and Raymond Kwok, two brothers who control Sun Kai Properties, the second largest property company in the world, were arrested by Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption Thursday, scandalizing the city. NBC's Ed Flanagan reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? If you?ve ever been to Hong Kong, you?ve undoubtedly walked by a building built or managed by Sun Hung Kai Properties, the second largest property company in the world and one of the small number of prominent developers that control real estate in this land-scarce region.

To say that the Kwok family, which controls Sun Hung Kai, has played a part in constructing Hong Kong?s iconic skyline would be massive understatement. Three of the tallest buildings in the city were constructed by the firm as well as one of the region?s more surreal icons, a replica of Noah?s Ark which doubles as a hotel and theme park. (The Kwoks are evangelical Christians.)

So when news broke that the company?s co-chairmen, Thomas and Raymond Kwok, were arrested on Thursday by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), it caused an uproar that has scandalized the city of 7 million and caused the firm?s stock to tumble.

Make that plummet.?

In trading Friday on Hong Kong?s Hang Seng Index, Sun Hung Kai?s stock value plunged 13 percent, for a total loss of $4.9 billion in market value.??

It was easily the company?s worst loss on the market in 14 years, according to Bloomberg News.

Though no charges were publically announced and the Kwok brothers were released late Thursday evening, their arrest at the same time as the reported detention of Rafael Hui, the number two in the Hong Kong government from 2005-2007,?has some speculating that the arrests were related.

If so, the arrests one again underscore the tight relationship between Hong Kong?s government and local property developers, both of whom are in a perpetual race to keep up with the housing demands in the world?s most densely populated city.

Mercurial rise not without its issues
With an estimated holdings of $18.3 billion dollars, the Kwok family is listed as the 27th wealthiest family in the world, according to Forbes Magazine. Their company, which was founded in 1963 by family patriarch, Kwok Tak Seng, has risen to prominence by breaking into every facet of the property business, from residential to hotels to industrial development.

Bobby Yip / Reuters

Thomas Kwok (R) and his younger brother Raymond Kwok, both Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties, listen to a question during a news conference announcing the company's interim results in Hong Kong in this March 11, 2009 file photo.

By the end of 2011, Sun Hung Kai was reported to have a land bank of 46.7 million square feet of gross floor area either completed or in development. The group also owns 26 million square feet of farmland in Hong Kong?s New Territories that is in the process of receiving planning permission to be converted to building land.?

That translates into an astounding amount of property under Sun Hung Kai?s control in a city where land is extremely precious.?

The company and the family have also long been in the spotlight in Hong Kong. When the family patriarch died in 1990, he left the reins to his eldest son Walter, who became chairman and chief executive. In 1997, Walter was kidnapped and held for a week before his family paid a ransom of more than $77 million to have him released.

Walter returned to the company after his release, but eventually the family relationship unraveled when Thomas and Raymond Kwok dethroned Walter in 2008.

With the support of their mother, the two brothers charged Walter with being unfit to run the business and after a nasty struggle, eventually took over. Thomas, 60, runs the construction of new developments and Raymond, 58, is in charge of the company?s finances.??

Are Hong Kong?s business and political interests too close?
The arrest of the Kwok brothers and Rafael Hui by the ICAC comes at a time when Hong Kong is dealing with a number of incidents that bring into question just how transparent and corruption-free the former British colony is today.

On the face of it, the city has a good reputation. The Heritage Foundation calls Hong Kong the world?s freest economy while Transparency International calls it the 12th least corrupt country and/or territory in the world. (The United States came out 10th and 24th respectively.)
?

But the relationship between real-estate developers and the government has long been a source of simmering tensions in the crowded city. Opposition leaders and some social groups have long criticized the cozy relationship between the government and the developers.

Thousands took to the streets in March to demand that the city?s Chief Executive Donald Tsang quit after he was ?was accused of accepting invitations for lavish yacht dinners and private jet trips from local businessmen.

In elections for the city?s next chief executive just last weekend, the winner Leung Chung-ying, campaigned on a platform of providing more low-income housing in the city.?

Some argue that the Kwok scandal is the next in a storyline of business and government blurring together too closely. However, the fact that the ICAC went ahead with this investigation suggests that for the present time at least, the mechanisms in place to deter and uncover corruption are still strong in Hong Kong.

Where this investigation goes from here will go a long way towards determining whether this latest crisis of faith in Hong Kong is the next step in a gradual erosion of Hong Kong?s autonomy and financial freedom or one that rights it once and for all.

Afghan massacre: Bales case echoes for vets on hotline

Combat veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts share their experiences with PTSD, and their reaction to reports that Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales allegedly gunned down 17 Afghan civilians. Msnbc.com's Kari Huus reports.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

LOS ANGELES ? The young men who answer the phones at the National Veterans Foundation's?hotline for troubled veterans speak with an authority that comes from having faced down the same demons that plague their callers.

All are combat veterans, having served up to four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all have struggled with either PTSD or traumatic brain injury ? the signature wounds of these conflicts ? or both.

For them, the story of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, accused of murdering 17 Afghan civilians during his fourth combat deployment, triggers mixed emotions ? horror over the senseless rampage but also empathy for a soldier who, in their view, apparently was pushed beyond?the breaking point.?But their more immediate concern is the impact it may have on the troubled voices on the other end of the phone lines they answer each day.

"One of the biggest issues we have ? is the vets don?t get the jobs," said Apolonio Munoz III, 28, an Army veteran deployed during the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 who works for the hotline while pursuing a social work degree. "[Employers] think they are whack-jobs and they?re all going to be cold-blooded killers, they?re going to come in and shoot up the place, which is not the situation."

Munoz and several other former soldiers who answer the hotline agreed to share with msnbc.com their thoughts on PTSD, the stresses of war and the news that Bales ? a 38-year-old soldier with a clean military record ? allegedly crept into an Afghan village at night on March 11 and slaughtered Afghan civilians, including women and children.

Their comments will likely presage parts of Bales' trial, in which the cumulative effects of combat deployments and the degree to which PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury) can be linked to violence will almost certainly play a role.

Bales, who has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder along with other charges, suffered a brain injury in Iraq but was not diagnosed as suffering from PTSD. His defense is expected to argue, however, that he suffered "diminished capacity" as a result of the injury and possibly undiagnosed PTSD. Bales, who is being held in detention at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, has not yet entered a plea to the charges, but his civilian defense attorney, John Henry Browne, has indicated he expects to mount a vigorous defense based in part on his client?s mental state.

How staff Sgt. Bales lawyers are fighting for his life

Many experts also expect the defense to produce expert witnesses to testify about the effects on mental health of repeat combat deployments. But just as with PTSD and TBI, the record is incomplete, as the Iraq and Afghan conflicts mark the first time the U.S. has cycled soldiers in and out of combat so many times.

The latter issue resonates loudly with the former soldiers who answer the hot line.

"It?s an absolute tragedy, and it never should have happened," Cameron White, 31, who served two tours of duty in Iraq with the Marines before leaving the military and becoming a college student and anti-war activist, said of the massacre in Kandahar province. He said he believes the killing were "a byproduct of a failed policy that continues to put traumatized troops out on the battlefield when they shouldn?t be there."

'Yes, I killed Iraqis'
White said that his experiences in Iraq led him to believe that not even the most hardened soldier is immune to meltdown amid the repeated stresses of combat.

James Cheng / msnbc.com

Left to right, Rich Rudnick, Wendell Guillermo and Apolonio E. Mu?oz III work at the National Veterans Foundation in Los Angeles.

"I think when you say ? 'that?s not me' or ?that would never happen to me,' I think anybody that says that is just lying to themselves," he said. "? Something like that could happen to any one of us."

Another hot line operator, Freddy Cordova, 29, who served four tours in Iraq from 2003 to 2008, said the mental health evaluations he received between deployments were cursory at best.

In an evaluation after his first deployment, Cordova said he answered 'yes' to most of the combat-related questions: "Yes, I saw dead people. Yes, I saw dead Americans. Yes, I fired my weapon. Yes, I killed Iraqis. Yes, I killed the enemy."?

"I didn?t report that I was a threat to others, but I put that I would like to speak to somebody," he said. "What did the Army turn around to do? They just overlook it. Four months later, I?m in Iraq again."

Floyd "Shad" Meshad, founder and president of the National Veterans Foundation and a psychiatric social worker with 40 years' experience working with combat veterans, said he has repeatedly seen the effects to overexposure to the horrors of war.

"We know that soldiers, when they have seen too much combat, they will either implode ? in suicide ? or explode," he said. "The military just continues to send people back into combat like they were rifles, just kind of cleans them up and sends them back in. ? I don?t want to say that everybody flips out like this, but a significant number do."

James Cheng / msnbc.com

Floyd 'Shad' Meshad, founder and president of the nonprofit National Veterans Foundation.

Meshad started his career as an Army mental health officer in Vietnam and was instrumental in developing a national network of community-based Veteran Centers, offering counseling, referrals and readjustment assistance, beginning in the 1970s. He has served as an expert witness in about a dozen trials for veterans facing the death penalty, he said, and appeared in court for hundreds of others facing?lesser charges.

When?Bales was identified as the suspect in the Afghan killings, Meshad rushed the soldier's?defense team an advance copy of a new book published by NVF, "Attorney's Guide to Defending Veterans in Criminal Court."

But he said he fears that politics -- including the need to appease the Afghan government -- may outweigh the role of mental health factors in the court's ruling on the Afghanistan slayings.

"They are going to cook Bales," he predicted.

But even the mention of PTSD and Bales in the same sentence worries Matthew Friedman, executive director of the National Center for PTSD under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"It will be a terrible thing if people with PTSD were painted with a Sgt. Bales paintbrush. It?s just not appropriate," said Friedman, who has been involved in research and treatment of PTSD for 35 years and is also a professor of psychiatry, toxicology and pharmacology at Dartmouth Medical School. "There is evidence that some people with PTSD may exhibit irritable or aggressive behavior at times. There?s no evidence that this kind of indiscriminate violence is a symptom of PTSD."

And he said that Bales? history before joining the military ? which included financial fraud and an assault case in Washington state ? signaled that he was a troubled individual.

Referrals and suicide intervention
The veterans working the NVF hot line have what most experts consider textbook cases of PTSD. They have struggled with anxiety, anger and hyper-vigilance brought home from the combat zone. For some, visiting a shopping mall is a daunting experience, as they find themselves constantly scanning for potential threats. Even as these men recover and pursue civilian jobs and studies, some yell in their sleep, dream about explosions or are startled by?loud noises or a glimpse of trash along the road that looks like an IED.

Most of the time, experts say, the damage from repeated exposure to combat plays out in insidious ways. It contributes to divorce and substance abuse, and takes a toll on the mental health of children. According to the Center for New American Security, 18 vets commit suicide every day.

The NVF hotline has been fielding between 11,000 and 12,000 calls a year over the last several years. Four or five a month come from veterans, or even soldiers still in service, who are dangerously depressed and threatening suicide, Meshad said.

Most others are from frustrated veterans and family members who need help navigating the complex VA benefits process, in need of legal assistance, substance abuse treatment or job training. NVF employees pride themselves in walking them?through every step,?and then following through if they encounter problems.

Each week, NVF staff does rounds in a van to check in on homeless veterans ? mostly older Vietnam era veterans who tend to cluster together in encampments after losing jobs and families to mental illness and addiction.

To these young veterans serving at NVF, the weekly workload highlights the need for more attention to the mental health of soldiers. In the case of the massacre in Afghanistan, they suggest, responsibility for that mental health lies with more than one individual.

"My reaction to Sergeant Bales ? was shock," said Jose Castro, an Army veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. "But, you know, when certain things are ignored about an individual soldier? and people are ? forced into situations that that aren?t healthy ? (that) ultimately can lead to something like this. It?s bound to happen."

"What do you expect for a guy who?s been deployed four times? Losing buddies, getting hurt, being in firefights and so forth," agreed Army veteran Wendell Guillermo, 26.? "And whether or not the military wants to acknowledge it? ? there is a breaking point."

(AP) ? Lindsay Lohan's days as a criminal defendant could be over ? if she can behave herself.

A judge on Thursday ended the long-running probation of the problem-prone actress in a 2007 drunken driving case after a string of violations, jail sentences and rehab stints.

The 25-year-old actress will remain on informal probation for taking a necklace without permission last year, but will no longer have a probation officer or face travel restrictions and weekly shifts cleaning up at the morgue.

Lohan, wearing a powder blue suit and black blouse, let out a sigh of relief as she left Judge Stephanie Sautner's courtroom, possibly for the last time.

"I just want to say thank you for being fair," Lohan told the judge. "It's really opened a lot of doors for me."

The judge said she wasn't going to lecture the actress, but gave her some parting advice.

"You need to live your life in a more mature way, stop the nightclubbing and focus on your work," Sautner said.

She reminded Lohan that she will remain on informal probation until May 2014 in the necklace case and could face up to 245 days in jail if she gets into trouble again.

Still, the end of probation left Lohan looking relieved. She hugged her attorney, Shawn Holley, before leaving the courtroom, and was beaming by the time she walked past the rows of cameras waiting for her outside the courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport.

Sautner's regimen of morgue duty, therapy and monthly court dates helped Lohan weather the drunken driving case. The judge opened the hearing by calling the case "endless."

Lohan is now free to focus on her career for the first time since May 2010, when she missed a court appearance and was later jailed for failing to complete the terms of her sentence.

The "Mean Girls" star has struggled with the case and her career since the two drunken driving arrests in 2007.

She had small appearances in films and did some modeling but came nowhere near her heyday as the star of Disney films and movies aimed at teens and young adults.

Her career is already showing signs of a comeback. She is due to guest star on an upcoming episode of "Glee," recently hosted a highly rated but criticized episode of "Saturday Night Live," and is set to star as Elizabeth Taylor in a television movie.

"Lindsay is already talking about her next few projects," her spokesman Steve Honig wrote in a statement after the hearing. "She is ready to start the next chapter in her life and get back to work and doing what she loves to do ? making movies."

Lohan's tortured four-and-a-half-year effort to complete probation is not unprecedented. Actress Michelle Rodriguez took more than five years to resolve her drunken driving case, which featured many of the same elements as the Lohan saga ? missed deadlines and jail sentences.

Other celebrities resolved their DUI cases much faster. Fellow female celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Khloe Kardashian were all sentenced to jail and faced multiple court hearings because they didn't properly comply with orders from a judge, but their cases have long since ended.

Lohan might still have to return to a courthouse to resolve civil issues.

Two weeks ago, a nightclub manager in Hollywood accused her of grazing him with her Porsche. The actress denied the accusation and no charges have been filed. But the matter could end up in a civil court, where Lohan is already being sued by two other people for auto-related incidents.

Three men who were in a car that Lohan commandeered and used during a chase along Pacific Coast Highway are suing her and the case is scheduled for trial later this year. The incident led to her second drunken driving arrest in 2007.

Lohan is also being sued by a woman who claims she was struck by the star's car while walking in West Hollywood, and by a former Betty Ford worker who was involved in an altercation with the actress during her three-month stay at the facility in late 2010.

Ralph Fiennes Chooses His Most Villainous Villain

From Lord Voldermort to a Nazi officer, the 'Wrath of the Titans' star chooses the baddest of his bad guys.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Few actors have been known for playing the bad guy quite like Ralph Fiennes. His career has introduced him to all different sorts of evil characters, from a Nazi officer, to the darkest wizard of our time, and most recently in "Wrath of the Titans," Hades, the lord of the Underworld.

With such a long list of villainous evil-doers to his name, could there be a most evil Ralph Fiennes character?

Even the man himself couldn't say for certain when MTV News spoke with him. "If they're fantasy figures, I don't know how evil they are, but I guess somewhere between Amon Goeth [in 'Schindler's List'] and Francis Dolarhyde in 'Red Dragon' would be really evil," he said.

But after playing the worst characters some fictional worlds have to offer, Fiennes said that his latest character could signal a new trend toward mortality.

His most recent villain, Hades, turns out to be not much of one in "Wrath of the Titans." "Hades is full of resentment, and I guess he's pretty destructive initially," Fiennes said. "I like it in this film, he has a change of heart and joins forces with the brother he started off hating. So that was a bit more for me to play."

For his next role, in the upcoming James Bond film "Skyfall," no details have been officially shared about his character. But Fiennes did hint that it may be different from the villains he played in the past: "I don't think that qualifies as a villain. I think that my villain days are coming to an end, I think."

Who do you think is Ralph Fiennes' most evil character? Sound off in the comments section!

Pope wraps Cuba visit with Mass, Fidel meeting

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI wraps up his visit to Cuba on Wednesday with an open-air Mass in the shrine of the Cuban revolution, hoping to revive the Catholic faith in this communist-run country. His other appointment promises a far more tantalizing climax: a meeting with Fidel Castro.

The former Cuban leader announced late Tuesday that he would happily meet with Benedict, saying he was asking for just a "few minutes of his very busy time" in Havana.

The Vatican had already said Benedict was available, so the confirmation from Castro was all that was needed to seal the appointment and end weeks of speculation as to whether Castro would repeat the meeting he held with Pope John Paul II during his historic 1998 visit.

"I will happily greet His Excellency Pope Benedict XVI as I did John Paul II, a man for whom contact with children and the humble raised feelings of affection," Castro wrote. "That's why I decided to ask for a few minutes of his very busy time when I heard from the mouth of our foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez, that he would be agreeable."

The audience and Benedict's Mass in Revolution Plaza come 14 years after John Paul preached on the same spot before hundreds of thousands of people, Fidel among them. Then, an image of Jesus Christ was displayed opposite the plaza's iconic image of revolutionary hero Ernesto "Che" Guevara, a remarkable development for a country that had been officially atheist until 1992.

This time around, a huge poster of Cuba's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, covered the facade of one of the buildings facing the plaza near Che. The icon has been the spiritual focus of Benedict's three-day visit, timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the appearance of the diminutive statue.

Benedict visited the statue in a sanctuary near the eastern city of Santiago on Tuesday morning and prayed to her for greater freedom and renewal for all Cubans ? another gentle nudge to the government to continue opening itself up to greater reforms.

"I have entrusted to the Mother of God the future of your country, advancing along the ways of renewal and hope, for the greater good of all Cubans," the pope said. "I have also prayed to the Virgin for the needs of those who suffer, of those who are deprived of freedom, those who are separated from their loved ones or who are undergoing times of difficulty."

It wasn't long before a top official in Havana responded: "In Cuba, there will not be political reform," said Marino Murillo, Cuba's economic czar and a vice president.

Benedict had begun his trip to Mexico and Cuba by asserting that Marxism as it was originally conceived is irrelevant for today's reality. Upon arriving on Cuban soil, however, he softened the message that clearly irritated his hosts, pressing gently instead for the Roman Catholic Church to play a greater role in Cuban life and for Cuba's people to enjoy greater freedoms.

The Vatican spokesman said the Holy See didn't take Murillo's comments as a rebuff to Benedict's call, noting that the pope isn't a political leader who can change laws or political systems. But he said Benedict does have some concrete hopes for the visit.

During a nearly hour-long meeting Tuesday with Cuban President Raul Castro ? twice the normal length of papal audiences with heads of state ? Benedict asked that the government declare a holiday for Good Friday, when Catholics commemorate the death of Christ.

The request, like so much of this trip, was a follow-up of sorts to Cuba's decision to declare Christmas a national holiday in honor of John Paul's 1998 visit. Cubans hadn't had Christmas off for nearly 30 years.

"It's not that it changes reality in a revolutionary way, but it can be a sign of a positive step ? as was the case of Christmas after John Paul's visit," said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The government didn't give an immediate response, but Lombardi said it was only natural for Cuba to take time to consider it. The government, which frequently declares holidays at the last minute, could make a quick gesture in honor of Benedict given that Good Friday this year falls in less than two weeks, on April 6.

Benedict also raised "humanitarian" issues with Raul Castro, an apparent reference to political prisoners. Lombardi said he didn't know if individual cases were discussed.

Primarily, though, Benedict came to Cuba to try to win a greater place in society for the Catholic Church, which has been marginalized in the six decades of Castro family rule.

The island's Communist government never outlawed religion, but it expelled priests and closed religious schools after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Tensions eased in the early 1990s when the government removed references to atheism in the constitution and let believers of all faiths join the Communist Party.

John Paul's 1998 visit further warmed relations. But despite years of lobbying, the church has virtually no access to state-run radio or television, is not allowed to administer schools and has not been granted permission to build new places of worship. Only about 10 percent of Cubans are practicing Catholics.

"Naturally a papal visit hopes to be an impulse for further steps, be it for the life of the church or for the good of society in its entirety," Lombardi told reporters, citing media, education and health care as areas where the church wants a greater say.

But in a country that once preached atheism and still is dominated by Marxist thought, that's not just a hard sell for the government, but for ordinary Cubans alike.

Ana Blanco, a 47-year-old Havana resident, complained that people were being told to attend Wednesday's Mass, saying the pressure seemed odd in a country that in her early years taught her religion was wrong.

"Now there's this visit by the pope, and I don't agree with giving it so much importance or making anyone go to the Mass or other activities," the office worker said. "Before it was bad, now it's good. That creates confusion."

Phoenix Business networking helps you remove the barriers to ...

Phoenix, Arizona, March 27, 2012 ? The Redwood Alliance, a group of like-minded small business owners serving as advisory board of each other to help promote business success, is now helpings its members remove the barriers to success by business networking.

?Phoenix Business networking is one of the best ways to help small businesses in Phoenix discover their full potential and remove all the barriers for their success,? Les Abrams, co-founder of The Redwood Alliance said.

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), only 51 percent of small businesses survive its first five years of operation. This is a very significant figure which tells something about the big possibility for a business to fail in the early years of its operation. There are different reasons why a business may fail or succeed. And no one can better understand these things than businessmen and business owners themselves. ?Business owners have a better understanding about running a business. Who can better advice a businessman than his fellow businessman? This is why The Redwood Alliance is providing an avenue where business people can meet and discuss things,? added Abrams.

To reduce the possibility of business failure, several groups like The Redwood Alliance group were organized serving as a business network for businessmen. Business networking is becoming popular these days because of its great benefits. Networkers will be able to participate in free advice and consultancy sessions from people who are also knowledgeable about running a business. Members of the group can also help each other when trials and difficulty arise.

The Phoenix Business networking group has earned a good reputation when it comes to providing their members with valuable information which they can use for their growth and development. As Abrams said, ?Our members can learn from each other because everyone will have a chance to share and listen to what their fellow businessmen have to say.? Abrams also said, ?With the right knowledge that our group can provide, combined with your right attitude, you will surely be able to remove all the barriers to your success.?

Common barriers to business success include fear to discover the great potential of your business because of lack of knowledge. There is a common saying in business which says that the higher the risk, the bigger the return. And this is almost always true. But you don?t have to risk on something that is completely new to you or something you have no knowledge about. With business networking, there are so many things you can learn that can help you move forward in your business and explore great possibilities without fear.

Another barrier of success is the lack of vision. Most small business owners are so focused on the day-to- day operation of their business and they forget all about their vision. Vision is very important because it is what motivates us to do something. The same is true for businesses; if you are working for the ?now? only without a clear vision of what you like to achieve in the coming years, you will easily get tired and frustrated whenever you will encounter trials. But when you have something in mind on what you like to achieve, you will be motivated to work and to move forward despite all challenges.

Emotional night in Marseille for Bayern's Ribery

By JEROME PUGMIRE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:20 p.m. ET March 27, 2012

MARSEILLE, France (AP) -Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery hopes the Marseille fans will remember the good times when he goes back to the club that launched his career for Wednesday's first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.

Ribery's last game for Marseille was five years ago, and the winger gave the fans who adored him something to remember by driving a tractor around Stade Velodrome after the match, with Samir Nasri in the passenger seat.

"I think what I did with the tractor was awesome," Ribery said Tuesday. "People loved me in Marseille because I gave everything, and they always expected me to do something with the ball. It gave me confidence, it made me want to try things.

"When the team loses, (Marseille) fans don't even want to eat, they don't feel good."

Given Ribery's recent form for free-scoring Bayern, which has netted 22 goals in the last five games, Ribery may well end up upsetting them on Wednesday night.

"I don't think the fans will be chanting 'Ribery, Ribery' for 90 minutes," said Ribery, who played for Marseille from 2005-07. "Marseille is a city that loves football. Marseille is in a difficult position in the league, but it will want to do something against us for the fans."

Ribery has already matched his career-best tally of 11 league goals this season, and has set up many more for striker Mario Gomez and fellow winger Arjen Robben.

"If I'm lucky enough to score I won't celebrate my goal and run around everywhere. I have a lot of respect for the club, for the people here," Ribery said. "They know my mentality, I have the same mentality as people here. I like giving my best, giving everything. I don't know how it will be inside the stadium, but I hope I get a good reception."

Marseille could do with Ribery having an off night, however.

Out of form and missing key players, Marseille is in the worst possible shape.

It recently set a dismal club record with seven straight defeats and has scored a meager five goals in eight games, faces Bayern without its best goalkeeper and first-choice center half, and with top scorer Loic Remy trying to shake off a thigh injury.

In sharp contrast to Marseille's slump, Bayern has been tearing opponents apart thanks to its mesmerizing three-pronged attack.

"I wouldn't say it would be a miracle (to beat Bayern), but they are a candidate to win the Champions League," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said on Tuesday. "They're in great form, which wasn't really the case with Inter Milan (in the previous round). Bayern always enter a competition with the intention of winning it, which isn't really the case for us."

Deschamps will wait until Wednesday morning to decide whether Remy can play.

"I hope so but I can't be sure," Deschamps said.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said Marseille, despite its troubles in the league, has proven its pedigree in Europe this season.

"We've seen what Marseille can do, they've had some good results," Heynckes said. "They finished first in their group ahead of (Bundesliga leader Borussia) Dortmund and they beat Inter Milan. We can't take them lightly."

Marseille ended its losing streak with a 1-1 draw at Nice on Saturday, but lost defender Souleymane Diawara for the rest of the season because of a knee injury. Deschamps must also cope without suspended goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

His absence couldn't come at a worse time.

In the previous round, the France No. 2's inspirational shot-stopping against Inter at the San Siro kept Marseille in the competition. But with quarterfinal qualification assured, he gave away a penalty in the final seconds and got sent off.

Deschamps said it was difficult choosing between Gennaro Bracigliano, who spilled an easy cross in last week's French Cup quarterfinal loss to semiprofessional Quevilly, and Elinton Andrade, who hasn't played since January 2011.

"It will be Andrade tomorrow, but I won't say why," Deschamps said. "I stand by my choice."

Andrade may have nightmares about Robben, Gomez and Ribery. With the kind of service Gomez gets, it's little wonder he's scored 10 goals in the competition - including four when Bayern destroyed FC Basel 7-0 in the previous round to record the biggest winning margin in the knockout rounds.

"You either mark the man, or cut off the service to him. I think it's best if he has the least service possible," Deschamps said of dealing with Gomez. "The least ammunition he gets, the less danger there will be."

Marseille, sitting ninth in the French league, will most likely need to win the Champions League to play in it next season.
