Relationship Trust ? How Do You Regain Trust in the Context of an ...

?

People in abusive relationships ask how do you regain trust after he/she has hurt me, hit me, cursed me? Many of these people genuinely long to rebuild trust in their compromised relationships. Yet, they claim that they are stuck. They simply don?t know how to trust their partner, again.

Domestic Abuse and Interpersonal Trust

It makes perfect sense that you see a person who hurt you as they show themselves to be with you, rather than expecting them to be, as you desire them to be. This is what is advised when one recognizes the obvious signs of domestic violence the first time in a new relationship.

In established relationships, issues of trust and history emerge. Couples wanting to recover from domestic abuse hold mixed memories of history and stumble on basic trust.

Why do they stumble? My sense is that the way they ?try? to rebuild trust supports their lack of trust. And most importantly, they fail to master accountability after trust is violated. For example, take a look at Robert and Fran.

Violation of Trust in an Abusive Relationship

Robert has a history of vicious name calling toward his partner Fran. They have had their fair share of physical altercations, as well. The straw that broke the camel?s back for Fran was the day she found herself arrested for domestic violence?all while she being the victimized party.

Fran remains perplexed at how she could ever trust this man again. Robert expects to regain Fran?s trust by her extending herself?and merely expecting him to be trust worthy. Fran fears he will continue abusing her AND have her arrested again.

Fran is ?gun shy.? Her belief is that Robert has already shown his ?true? colors. She doesn?t want to chance exposing herself to further abuse. Yet, she longs to know how she can grow to trust him again.

Accountability and Trust in Abusive Relationships

What?s missing for Fran is ?accountability.? All she wants to hear from him is that he realizes what he did and recognizes the wrongdoing toward her and implications to her.

As a start, she wants his empathy and genuine ownership. She wants him to be responsible for his actions. With that accountability from Robert, Fran can consider extending herself. Without it, she is stuck?and unwilling to rebuild trust by furthering her vulnerability.

If you are in a relationship in which your trust has been violated, ask yourself what you need to move beyond the violation. What do you long for and require as a platform to rebuild trust? Or, has a line been crossed beyond which you can ever dare to trust again?

Two-way radios outsmart phones for intelligent fleet communications

There has never been a more important time for companies ? particularly smaller businesses ? to take control of their fleet communications.

With a growing percentage of the global workforce?

becoming more mobile, the adoption of newer, innovative

technologies is becoming increasingly important in helping

organisations stay connected to their employees in the field,

while ensuring the benefits of greater operational efficiency.

While we constantly hear about the growing popularity of

consumer mobile devices like tablets and smartphones in

business settings, what we haven?t heard as much about

is the increasing uptake of digital two-way radios in fleet

management.

Two-way radios might seem dated at first thought, however,

the potential benefits these devices offer businesses in

terms of productivity improvements, increased efficiency

and cost-effectiveness make this a hidden growth story.

There are a number of reasons for this popularity. The most

important are the unique features of two-way radios.

For example, two-way radios are still one of the only

devices through which an organisation can facilitate

instant one-to-many group communications. There?s still no

faster or more cost-effective way to assign and schedule

multiple mobile vehicles and blue-collar personnel than with

two-way radios.

Another key differentiator is longevity. Both two-way radio

devices and networks have been designed for much longer

lifecycles than the average faster-moving consumer-oriented

mobile devices of today. Overall, these lifecycles combined

with usage patterns translates into lower overall total

ownership costs for organisations as devices last longer, and

organisations do not have to contend with subscriptions or

pay-per-use fees. Users also tend to use these devices for

critical communications only, rather than social conversation,

thus enhancing productivity.

The advent of digital radios in particular promises to keep

this technology relevant for years to come. Modern digital

units now enable a whole range of applications such as GPS

location-based services, text messaging and other mobile

applications ? and even roaming onto mobile networks ?

creating new opportunities for increased efficiency and

productivity benefits.

Flipboard (for Android)

Flipboard, one of the first apps that sold many on the idea of the iPad being more than an oversized iPhone, makes its first jump to the Android platform, as a smartphone app. Compatible with Android 2.2 and higher, the free Flipboard for Android delivers the same excellent social reading experience, albeit in smaller, slightly tweaked form. Flipboard for Android has a few niggles?namely the lack of dedicated offline reading and the lack of a dedicated tablet version?but it's still a slick, highly accessible Android reading app that now features Google+ and YouTube support.

The Flipboard ExperienceYou'll be familiar with Flipboard for Android if you've spent time with Flipboard (for iPad)?(Free, 4.5 stars). It features a large rectangular Cover Stories panel featuring highlighted recent articles, and smaller square panels that showcase the latest articles from the sources to which you've subscribed. If the article has an image, it's displayed as a thumbnail that fronts the panel. Overall, the interface, despite being smaller than the iPad version's, looks great is surprisingly uncramped. News Republic, a rival app, is a bit visually cluttered in comparison?and it features advertising at the bottom of the screen.

There are two differences of note from the iPad version of Flipboard: You navigate the Flipboard for Android interface by swiping up or down, not horizontally as with Flipboard for iPad. The change is a welcome, as it feels more natural to navigate with your thumb when using a phone. In addition, Flipboard only displays one article block per screen?the iPad version shows multiple. Don't consider this a drawback, however. This limitation prevents small, hard-to-read panels.

By default, you can't read articles without an internet connection, but you can save individual pages for offline reading if you have an Instapaper, Pocket, or Readability account. Google Currents (Free, 3.5 stars), and Android news aggregator, lets you save articles to your device without third-party apps. Flipboard for Android offers numerous ways to share content: Bump, Facebook, the newly added Google+, Skype, Twitter, email, and many more. I like the variety offered here. You can also leave comments on articles, and view articles in their original forms on their respective Web pages.

Flipboard for Android contains a dedicated YouTube section that lets you view popular videos, or subscribe to a channels simply by tapping the "+" icon located next to a channel's name. A trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter streamed smoothly over a Wi-Fi connection.

Flipping Out for Flipboard
Flipboard for Android, much like Flipboard for iPad, is a superb alternative to standalone RSS feed readers, browsing individual sites, and following Facebook and Twitter feeds. Being smartphone-centric, it's not quite as easy to read as the iPad version, which displays articles on a magazine-size 9.7-inch display. Still, Flipboard is an excellent Android phone app that's worthy of an Editors' Choice award.

Samsung's 27-inch Series 9 LED monitor hits US retailers

Samsung wasn't saying much about US availability when it showed off its new Series 9 monitor back at CES in January, but it's now finally confirmed that it will be available at a number of different retailers starting June 29th (following a brief "prelaunch" period with Newegg). Coming in at the expected $1,199.99, this one is a 16:9 LED PLS monitor, and it packs a suitably high-end 2560 x 1440 resolution along with most of the other features you'd expect from a $1,200 monitor: HDMI, DVI and a pair of USB ports, an all glass and metal enclosure, and support for MHL-enabled smartphones and tablets. Those curious can find a full rundown of the rest of the specs at the source link below.

West Jefferson, North Carolina is located just east of the Cherokee National Forest and just south of the Virginia border. Before the Norfolk and Western Railroad, better known as the ?Virginia Creeper,? began utilizing the town as a depot, it was sparsely populated and mostly known for its orchards. As the railway began to bring commerce to the area, the town expanded and was further supported by the local textile industry. Unfortunately, both of these areas of the economy dried up, but today the small town is thriving due to a healthy tourism industry.

The areas just outside of the downtown are also becoming home to many retirees who are looking for a beautiful, quiet place to spend their retirement. West Jefferson is located directly in the Appalachian Mountains and offers spectacular views and plenty of outdoor activities. The New River flows through town and offers ideal conditions for fishing, canoeing, tubing, and kayaking. The surrounding mountains also offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural wonders of North Carolina. The stunning landscape has lead many annual tourists to transition into full-time residents once they retire.

Although West Jefferson is a small, mountain town, it still has plenty of attractions to keep you busy. It is especially known as an artistic hub that is home to many shops and galleries that feature local artists. There is even an art walk that will take you through town and highlight 15 different murals that celebrate the area. You can also enjoy local produce year round at the farmers? market and fresh cheese from the Ashe County Cheese Store, which has been open since 1930. If you are in the mood for a little entertainment, there are several different venues and organizations that hold concerts and put on productions of different plays. With all these attractions and annual festivals, there is always something to do if you feel like getting out of the house and enjoying the community.

One of the main reasons retirees are attracted to west Jefferson is because it seems like such a quiet and out of the way town, yet it is located only 25 miles north of Boone, which is a bustling college town. This means that you can enjoy the best of many different worlds. You will have the mountains and the charm of West Jefferson at your front door and you can easily drive down to Boone to enjoy a town full of great restaurants and a lively nightlife. Retirement doesn?t have to mean slowing down and hiding away in the mountains. Living in West Jefferson means that the choice is entirely yours. Opportunities to get out and enjoy both physical and cultural activities are abundant or you can opt for a quiet night at home in front of the fire.

While many retirees choose to start the great migration south to Florida to enjoy the warm weather, you can beat the heat and bask in a much more temperate climate in the mountains of North Carolina. The south may be known for its sweltering summers, but up in the mountains, the temperature hovers around the upper 70s and low 80s during the summer months. The winters also stay pretty mild, typically in the 40s and 50s. This means that you will still get to enjoy the changing of the seasons without have to deal with extreme weather. It will be warm enough to swim in the river during the summer and cool enough for the ski resorts to cover the mountains in the winter, so no matter what time of year it is, there is always something to get out and do.

David R. Ginsburg: Reality Television and the Limitations of Copyright

Recent weeks have seen much entertainment industry and legal attention to an aggressive dispute between two networks over a pair of "reality" television shows. CBS has broadcast Big Brother in the United States since 2000, and it got wind of a prospective but as-yet uncompleted show entitled The Glass House it believed ABC was developing for a June 18, 2012 debut. In general, both shows involve a group of people living together in a house, sequestered from the outside world, continuously monitored by numerous television cameras, and on both shows contestants are eliminated over a respective season until there is a prize winner. In May, after warning ABC not to proceed, CBS filed a lawsuit in federal court, alleging copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and various other breaches and wrongdoing. CBS vested particular ire in the claim that several former Big Brother employees had been engaged to work on ABC's show, though the conflation of that part of the complaint with the copyright count underplayed the separable nature of the alleged breach of employment obligations and any potential infringement by the ABC show as it might be finally produced.

On June 15, the presiding judge announced that, in accordance with relevant precedent, he was inclined to deny CBS' request for a temporary restraining order to halt ABC's airing of its show, which, in fact, proceeded as scheduled. CBS appeared so frustrated at the foregoing that it issued a press release sarcastically announcing two imaginary shows, Dancing On the Stars and Postmodern Family, both mocking current ABC properties. On June 21, the matter interimly culminated when the judge issued a detailed civil minute opinion finding that CBS was unlikely to prevail on the merits, that it had failed to demonstrate entitlement to the relief it sought, and denying an order to show cause for a preliminary injunction. My instinct, however, is that CBS is too astute and is too well-represented not to have expected the court's reasoning and these results. If so, what motivates the relentless attempts by reality TV plaintiffs to seek injunctive and damage relief that courts are simply not granting?

There can be no doubt that, in the mind of the public, the industry press and blogosphere, and, often, even in the words of plaintiff's learned counsel in this kind of case, the second and subsequent shows in what is a typical cycle of seriatim reality programs with a similar premise -- without any aspersions cast, think of American Idol, America's Got Talent, and The Voice, or Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn, or any reality show about finding, buying, selling, or remodeling a house -- inevitably provoke pejorative rubrics such as "copycat" and "knock-off" despite the absence of meaningful judicial concurrence. The simple problem faced by irked plaintiffs searching for a way to prohibit subsequent reality TV shows of similar content, however, is that American copyright law was neither Constitutionally conceived nor legislatively drafted to prohibit that sort of "copying". Indeed, it was designed to permit it. The operative principle is that copyright law does not protect basic ideas -- that is, say, a show featuring a talent competition or the activities in a pawn shop -- but, rather, only the original and concrete expression of such ideas. The difference is embodied in a doctrine called the "idea-expression dichotomy", and while a precise, one-size-fits-all definition of the idea-expression boundary has always been elusive, for our purposes a progression from abstraction to concreteness in detail is helpful and illustrative. To violate an author's valid copyright, it is thus not enough that another work comprises merely similar ideas, or even that its ideas were, as commonly understood, "copied". The standard instead is one the courts call substantial similarity, which evidences a significantly higher coincidence of shared expressive content.

The dimensions of comparison in substantial similarity analysis may include plot, characters, dialogue, sequence of events, setting, tone, and theme, which the works in question must be demonstrated to share as concrete expression to a high degree. Some plaintiffs, seemingly aware that they can adduce only scant similarities among the above touchstones, also rely on a stopgap claim of "compilation", alleging that facts or ideas are collated or ordered in a similar way. The Supreme Court has ruled, however, that a compilation- based copyright is on narrow grounds, or "thin", such that the infringement must be virtually identical, a level beyond substantial similarity. Moreover, there are certain classes of similarities, however, even if present, that cannot form the basis for a finding of substantial similarity between two works if they constitute one or more of the following: a mere inexpressive idea, fact, or concept; predictable stock content common to a genre; material found in third-party works extant prior to the plaintiff's creation; a taking considered a "fair use" for legal and policy reasons; or material already in the public domain. Applying the above generally, while copyright law would not protect the bare idea for a movie with an abstract, archetype lawman, a bad guy, and a shootout, it would much more likely protect the aggregate, concretely described and expressive lawman, bad guy, and shootout elements of, say, High Noon or Die Hard.

The courts have extended to reality television the same copyright principles and standards as were developed primarily in the fictional or dramatic context. In a line of cases dating back to -- guess what? -- the 2003 prior match where CBS lost its claim that ABC's I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! infringed Survivor, courts that decided the matter have declined relief to reality TV plaintiffs, largely on the basis that the defendants' shows simply shared ideas or stock elements. The actual progression of incident, the concrete specifics of the "characters" (the hosts, announcers, contestants, coaches, and other participants), the words they uttered, and the expressive content, design, and detail of the setting, all taken together, were quite different where the law demands that they be quite -- or "substantially" -- similar, and even where they shared certain similar ideas.

Were the governing copyright principles to be otherwise, then, for example, the first talk show featuring an announcer, a live band, a stand-up comedian host, a raised stage arranged with a guest couch and the host's desk, silly games played with audience participation, two celebrity guests, and a concluding musical act could purport to secure an exclusive copyright to the above as against subsequent talk shows with the listed similarities, an intuitively absurd result, and one contrary to sound policy. The same could be said of two classic situation comedies, I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show, where both shows feature a family which includes a father in show business, a housewife mother, a son named Ricky or Ritchie, set principally in the family's living room and the father's workplace, where the family closely interacts with its immediate neighbors who often drop in unannounced, and where the mother's antics often get her in trouble with her husband. Once again, the two shows are not substantially similar because they only share the commonality of the above abstract ideas, not their expression, which lies in the concrete realization of those ideas, and which, compared show-to-show and episode-to-episode, differed fundamentally as to story, more specific character details, and so on. Had the above or comparable lists of idea similarities been exclusively protected at the dawn of talk shows or situation comedies, the development of entire genres of television and those who work in them might have been impermissibly curtailed.

Litigants would be well-served to think of copyright protection as a cordon sanitaire of expression within which proprietors enjoy defined and exclusive rights for limited times, but beyond which other creators are free to use more general ideas, concepts, and certain other content. As the Ninth Circuit federal appellate court (which includes California) enunciated in Satava v. Lowry, Congress

granted artists the exclusive right to the original expression in their works, thereby giving them a financial incentive to create works to enrich our culture. But it denied artists the exclusive right to ideas and standard elements in their works, thereby preventing them from monopolizing what rightfully belongs to the public.
And because of that, people in The Glass House may throw stones.

David R. Ginsburg is the executive director of the Entertainment, Media, and Intellectual Property Law Program at the UCLA School of Law, where he is also a lecturer. He frequently acts as an expert witness in entertainment litigation, and he has done so on behalf of both CBS and ABC in the past, though he is not involved in the present case.

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

(AP) ? Shares of Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. fell Monday after federal regulators unexpectedly delayed for a second time a decision on whether to approve the companies' highly touted experimental anticlotting drug Eliquis.

Some analysts see Eliquis as better than two new clot-preventing pills that beat it to market, but the latest delay means a U.S. launch of Eliquis likely won't happen until next year.

The Food and Drug Administration said it wants more information on "data management and verification" from a huge international study called ARISTOTLE that examined how well Eliquis prevented strokes in patients with an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation, the drugmakers said Monday.

The companies said the FDA did not ask for new studies, and they plan to work quickly to address outstanding questions. Even so, a spokeswoman for New York-based Bristol-Myers said the agency could take up to six months to review their response.

"We are already working with the agency, and we are hopeful that the review of our submission can be completed within a shorter timeframe," said spokeswoman Laura Hortas.

Analyst Erik Gordon, a professor at University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, said the FDA requiring more information on data management and verification indicates "someone either flubbed the application by not making the data management process clear or flubbed the actual data process."

"It's a giant botch-up to, at best, lose a year on one of your much-needed blockbusters," Gordon added.

In afternoon trading, Bristol-Myers shares dropped $1.17, or 3.3 percent, at $34.19, and Pfizer shares fell 23 cents to $22.49 per share.

The news has a bigger impact on Bristol-Myers, because it is much smaller than Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker. Also, the FDA in January delayed a decision on another crucial experimental drug from Bristol, diabetes treatment Forxiga, known chemically as dapagliflozin. The agency said it needed more data, including data from an ongoing study and possibly new studies, to assess Forxiga's benefits and risks.

Eliquis, known chemically as apixaban, is one of a handful of new drugs meant to prevent heart attacks and strokes better than warfarin ? long the standard treatment despite how tricky it is to use. Eliquis, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH's Pradaxa and Xarelto from Johnson & Johnson and Bayer HealthCare all are expected to grow into much-needed blockbusters for their makers, with annual sales topping $1 billion.

"All of this is surprising given the widespread perception that Eliquis is a best-in-class product relative to already-approved" Pradaxa and Xarelto, BernsteinResearch analyst Dr. Tim Anderson wrote of the new delay.

It could benefit Xarelto and Pradaxa, and possibly a fourth stroke-preventing pill in late-stage testing by Daiichi Sankyo, called edoxaban, Barclays analyst C. Anthony Butler wrote to investors.

"The longer time window is significant in a market that appears to be less open to switches (from warfarin) than previously assumed," Butler wrote.

He added that if Bristol-Myers and Pfizer give the FDA the new information by September, the agency could make a decision next March. That would be a year after the FDA's original target date for a decision on Eliquis. At the end of March, the FDA pushed back its original deadline until June 28, saying it needed more time to review additional information the companies submitted after applying for approval late last year.

Both men noted analysts may revise their sales forecasts for Eliquis, which Anderson had pegged at $2.3 billion in 2015 and $3.5 billion in 2020.

Doctors and millions of patients have long wanted a better alternative to warfarin, an inexpensive generic drug also sold under brand names such as Coumadin. Getting the dose of warfarin correct is so tricky that patients must have frequent blood tests to ensure they're getting enough to prevent clots but not enough to cause internal bleeding. Some foods interact with warfarin, compounding the difficulty.

Bristol-Myers discovered Eliquis and since 2007 has been testing it in partnership with New York-based Pfizer. The European Union approved it in May for preventing blood clots in patients getting hip or knee replacement surgery, and the companies are considering whether to seek approval for that use in the U.S., Hortas said. The drug also is in late-stage testing for treating patients with clots in major blood vessels.

Pradaxa, also known as dabigatran, was first to market, getting approved in October 2010 for patients with atrial fibrillation. Xarelto has since been approved for patients with atrial fibrillation and for preventing blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. But J&J said last week the FDA denied its request to expand approval of Xarelto to prevent life-threatening blood clots in patients with acute coronary artery disease, and it expects to work with them to address the questions as quickly as possible.

Google Play Store hints Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, coming soon to Galaxy Nexus

Google?s upcoming update for its mobile Android platform may not be far, we have been hearing about it since a long time. Now the Google Play store has revealed that the Galaxy Nexus would be the first existing device which will get the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

The Google Play listing for the Galaxy Nexus says, ?The latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.? Along with it Google has uploaded a low resolution image of what seems to the Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It is a poor image and since it is quite hard to decipher the key changes which will be introduced in the updated UI.

However there are some new changes which you can spot, first being the stock wallpaper, secondly there might be new stock icons and probably a tweaked Google search bar which seems to dock at the top of screen.

There is not information as to how long will it take to reach the device, although we can expect more information on the same at Google I/O which will start on June 27, where Google is also expected to launch its first Nexus tablet. The first Nexus tablet is rumored to be manufactured by Asus, and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

One major problem Google will face with the new Android update getting it on existing Android devices. At the moment less than 10 percent of Android devices are running the latest Android 4.0 ICS, which suggests that the previous generation Android smartphones may take quite a lot of time to get updated to this version.

Barely South Review ? Speaking Our Truth

Old Dominion University M.F.A. Creative Writing Program student Wendi White attended the 2012 Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) national conference in March. She queried a diverse group of women writers on how they have navigated the rocky waters of composing a writer?s life. She spoke with women authors of varying genres and ages about the empowerment strategies they have used to break through the barriers that women writers still experience. These conversations also explored what is needed for women to make continued progress in the profession.

For writers there are three roads that wind toward truth: reportage, lyric imagery, and narrative. While all these roads traverse different landscapes, at their best, compassion for our shared humanity is the destination of each. So though there is great variation between nonfiction, poetry and fiction?s relationship to ?facts?, in the end they are all ways to push the pen beneath the surface of experience and ask, ?What does this mean?? Pablo Picasso put it this way, ?Art is the lie that tells the truth.?

This past March, I had the honor of discussing how writers come to speak their truth with three very accomplished women authors: the nationally acclaimed poet, Dorianne Laux, award winning novelist and short story writer, Bonnie Jo Campbell, and journalist and author of a bestselling memoir, Janine Latus. Though they each write in a different genre, there were striking commonalities across the three conversations; an indispensable teacher, a pivotal text or artist, and an experience that emboldened them to say what they had to say.

In my conversation with Dorianne Laux, a poet whose pitch perfect voice and deep reserve of empathy caused Philip Levine to compare her to Walt Whitman, I asked her what sparked the writing fire in her soul. Without missing a beat, she revealed that Bertol Brecht held that place of honor. She fell in love with drama in high school, studied it in college, but eventually became disillusioned with how actors were always, well, acting. Then she read and saw Brecht?s work, recognizing that he was doing something very different. ?I admired how Brecht was speaking his personal truth.? To this day, the power of such truth telling informs her writing.

But being inspired by Brecht was not enough to launch her poet?s journey. At this point, Laux was only writing poems in private.? It took that alchemy of necessity and good fortune for her to publically proclaim herself a poet.? As a single mother, Laux was waiting tables and felt she needed to return to school to be a good role model and provider for her daughter.? She recounts how she chose her academic field: ?I am naturally lazy, so I knew I had to pursue something I love. I decided to take English classes because I enjoyed writing and thought maybe I could be an editor or a journalist . . . do something practical with my life and get job writing.?

It was in her first composition class that Laux met the poet and teacher, Patricia Traxler. After being assigned poems to compose, Laux?s professor responded by saying ?You know you really excel at the poem, you should write poems.? So Laux recalls,

?I took poetry classes and eventually studied with Steve Kowit, a wonderful poet. He introduced me to all the women poets, and world poets. I didn?t know there were women my age that had children and were writing poetry . . . After I found out about the whole thing . . . the readings in the bookstores, got my first poems published in local magazines, then I realized I wanted to be a poet. ?

And though recognition of her talent and knowing that other women in similar circumstances were undertaking a poet?s life helped Laux imagine a life of verse, it was the political courage that poets like Carolynn Forche and Sharon Olds displayed in addressing state violence, racism and family violence, that convinced her of a writing life?s worth.

?I was a single-mother. I was a waitress living in a border town who had seen a lot of domestic cruelty, and who had seen a lot of political cruelty. Forche had the courage to go down to Central America and Olds was so outrageously honest even though she grew up with so many family secrets. (After reading their poems, I understood) people can tell the truth . . . Quietly, in a darkened room with one light on a person, just saying what they have to say.?

Bonnie Jo Campbell, a writer of stories of people and places at the margins of society, took a similarly roundabout route to being a writer, although she confessed,

?All my life I wanted to write but I never let myself. I didn?t want to be involved in something I saw as cruel and competitive because I thought I didn?t have a chance. What does a little farm kid from Michigan have to say? I am pretty tough, but writing makes you very vulnerable with all you have written out there in the world.?

Like Laux?s flirtations with editing and journalism, Campbell could not imagine herself as a novelist, and so she got two undergraduate degrees in other fields: one in philosophy and one in mathematics. She was on her way to a Ph.D. when a math adviser, who knew she still wanted to write, suggested she take a class with author Jaimy Gordon.? Like Campbell, Gordon outlines the human condition through the narratives of people and places that have fallen on hard times. After reading Campbell?s work, Gordon told her, ?You have what it takes,? and having someone that Campbell so admired value her as a writer, provided the final push she needed to call herself an author.

It also gave Campbell permission to tell the stories of outsider women: circus performers and the struggling inhabitants of Campbell?s native Kalamazoo for example. In our conversation, I asked why so many of the characters in the her short story collection, Women and Other Animals, are souls just eking out an existence or living on the edge and Campbell responded:

?I want to take the reader to the dark side to show what true resiliency looks like. My women are not victims. They are facing dire and desperate circumstances, but they are survivors. Interesting stories are not about victims but survivors.?

That there is something inside of us that can rise up whole after shattering abuse, that after betrayal and loss, our capacity to love and speak that love can redeem us, certainly makes survivors worthy protagonists. This a literary truth mirrored in the non-fiction work of writers like Janine Latus.

In her New York Times Bestselling memoir, If I Am found Dead or Missing, Latus shares the story of her sister?s murder and her own experience of sexual and relationship abuse. When I queried her about her motivation to reveal such difficult personal stories, she replied:

?I wanted to write a book as important as Are you There God? It?s me Margaret?, by Judy Bloom. It exposed something nobody was talking about. It was so revolutionary then.? If you can write, you can make people consider things they would never have thought of before.

I couldn?t save my sister Amy, so I wrote my book to save the other Amys out there. I wrote it because as Harriet Tubman said, ?I saved a thousand slaves. I would have saved a thousand more if they knew that they were slaves.? I did it to create a wedge so dangerous behavior in the beginning of relationships would be recognized.?

And speaking these truths about her sister, herself, and her family?s history took immense courage, but Latus knew she had to tell these stories because they epitomized the dynamic of abuse she wanted to expose:

?I wrote (about what happened to me)so people would recognize ?the abuse in their own lives and turn to each other and say ,we need to talk.?

And it is one thing to tell your own secrets but quite another to tell the stories of your family.? Latus called negotiating these waters the one of the most difficult parts of her project:

?Everyone but my father read my book before it was published and almost all of them supported me because they are so incredibly brave. It was also helpful that a magazine article I wrote for Oprah, ?All the Wrong Men,? had recently come out and my family members were told by their colleagues that our story was their story too. My family understood the impact the book could have because of the way people responded to that article.?

So with Latus, as with Laux and Campbell, it was clear that chance to make a positive difference made telling a personal truth worth the risk. The act of writing is important, but it is the reader who ultimately concerned the women I interviewed. They write to touch another person?s life through literary truth telling, and if their words are ?the best words, in the best order,? these women believe that the world might be better off for their breaking the silence and lifting their pens.

China factories in eighth month of contraction: PMI

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's factory sector shrank for an eighth straight month in June as export orders sentiment hit its weakest level since early 2009, according to a survey that indicates the country's economic trough may extend well into the third quarter.

The HSBC Flash Purchasing Managers Index, the earliest monthly indicator of China's industrial activity, fell to a seven-month low of 48.1 in June from a final reading of 48.4 in May.

It marked the eighth consecutive month that the HSBC PMI has been below 50, indicating contraction and matching a similar streak during the much deeper slowdown during the global financial crisis of 2008/2009.

Asian stocks fell and commodities slipped broadly.

After a sluggish economic performance in April and May, the HSBC figures suggest June fared little better, dashing hopes that activity would show signs of picking up in the second quarter.

Rather than a V-shaped recovery, China's economy may be facing more of a longer-term trough before it picks up, or a U-shaped recovery, analysts say.

"Economic activity going into June is still quite soft in general," said Kevin Lai, an analyst at Daiwa in Hong Kong.

Economic growth is widely expected to have slid for the sixth straight quarter in April through June, as the country feels the impact of the euro area debt crisis and as property controls weigh on domestic demand.

Connie Tse, an economist at Forecast Ltd in Singapore, said she sees an "increasing chance" that second-quarter annual growth will edge close to 7 percent, which would be the weakest pace of expansion since early 2009.

As recently as May, a Reuters poll had a median forecast of 7.9 percent for the second quarter.

The HSBC Flash PMI indicated pressure on both the domestic and externally oriented economy.

The new orders sub-index fell in June and the new export orders sub-index dropped even more sharply, to 45.9, its lowest level since March 2009 when China began to pull out of the doldrums of the global financial crisis.

Both input and output prices dropped to their lowest levels since the 2008/2009 crisis, while a sub-index measuring output hit a three-month low, according to the data compiled by Markit Economics Research.

Asian stocks slipped and commodities fell broadly. MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 1.4 percent, Brent crude slid to an 18-month low and the Australian dollar, sensitive to commodities demand, lost ground.

In China, the growth-sensitive energy sector fell. The yuan dropped the most from its daily trading marker set by the central bank since the currency's trading band was widened in April.

"With external headwinds remaining strong, exports are likely to decelerate in the coming months," HSBC economist Qu Hongbin said in a note accompanying the survey.

"The sharp fall of prices and moderation of new orders suggest weak domestic demand, posing destocking pressures for Chinese manufacturers."

    EUROPE

The most striking element in Thursday's PMI report was the bearish outlook for exports in the orders index, which has twice this year darted over 50 to indicate expansion before subsequently retreating.

Shoots of optimism in April were drowned out by the European debt crisis, which is alarming policymakers globally. The euro area slump poses particular problems for China and other Asian countries used to relying on exports to fuel their economies.

Japan this week recorded its first monthly trade deficit with the European Union since at least 1979. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve delivered another round of monetary stimulus, citing concern over the euro area.

Flash PMIs on the EU showed a downturn in the bloc's private sector is becoming entrenched as falling new orders and employment dent confidence.

China's PMI survey will disappoint those who hoped that official efforts to support growth were gaining traction.

"The drop in the HSBC PMI goes against the grain of a lengthening list of other leading indicators, hinting that the economy is bottoming, including new loans, newly planned investment projects, real estate investment, exports, (and) car sales," Nomura economist Zhiwei Zhang wrote in a client note on Thursday.

In May, Beijing signaled its biggest push since joining the World Trade Organisation to boost private investment into areas previously reserved for the state sector, including rail, hospitals, power generation and energy transmission.

It has also fast-tracked some infrastructure projects and since November cut banks' required reserve (RRR) levels three times.

In its biggest move to bolster growth, China unexpectedly cut interest rates this month for the first time since the 2008/09 financial tsunami.

Analysts expect further measures from Beijing to prop up growth this year, especially as the euro area crisis appears to be deepening.

"I do not rule out another benchmark interest rate cut in Q3/Q4," Forecast's Tse said. "RRR cuts may occur more frequently."

The Reuters May poll forecast 2012 growth of 8.2 percent, the weakest pace since 1999, reflecting the sluggish global economy plus efforts by Beijing to reorientate the economy towards domestic consumption.

"We still expect full-year growth of 8.4 percent, which implies some cyclical recovery in the second half of the year," Daiwa's Lai said.

Both the HSBC-sponsored PMI and the Chinese government's official PMI have retreated after briefly pointing to an improved outlook in April. The HSBC final report for June and the government version are due to be published in the first few days of July.

The government survey includes more state-owned firms in its results, while the HSBC PMI captures more private firms, whose access to credit is more restricted. The two surveys also have different methodologies for seasonal adjustment.

The HSBC Manufacturing PMI index has not been consistently above 50 since June 2011, although it is far above readings of the low-40s reached during the depth of the global financial crisis.

    Twitter goes down, productivity skyrockets

    20 hrs.

Updated 5:31?p.m. ET to reflect the end of the outage

You've probably already noticed, but Twitter went down for a while today. In theory, this means that productivity should have?skyrocketed around the world???as soon as we all stopped frantically trying to refresh our Twitter feeds.

We don't know much about the outage, but Twitter did add a message to its official status page, pointing out that "users may be experiencing issues accessing" the social networking service when things came crashing down. Some users were seemingly?able to access Twitter through mobile.twitter.com?throughout the outage, though.

By late Thursday afternoon, Twitter issued this update via its @twittercomms account: "Today's outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We'll provide updated information soon."?A cascaded bug has an effect that isn't confined to a particular software element; its effect "cascades" into other elements as well.

In the aftermath of this social media tragedy, I offer my sympathies to anyone who is suffered Twitter withdrawal symptoms like I am and invite him or her to seek comfort on my or on msnbc.com tech's Facebook pages.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Eating Disorders Common in Older Women

gty weight mr 120620 wblog Eating Disorders Common in Older Women

Eating disorders have no boundaries when it comes to age, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

While people may associate eating disorders with teen girls and young women, there may be a growing number of older people who experience the same struggles.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina surveyed more than 1,800 women 50 and older to see how many had eating disorders and to assess the impact of disordered eating in women who engaged in these practices. Sixty-two percent of the women reported that their weight negatively impacted their lives, 8 percent reported purging and 70 percent said they were in the process of dieting or trying to lose weight.

This study ?really busts the myths that disordered eating is the province of adolescent and young adult women,? said Dr. Cynthia Bulik, director of the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program and lead author of the study. ?We have very little clinical research on mid- and late-life eating disorders. The most important thing for clinicians is to keep eating disorders on their radar screen regardless of a patient?s age.?

The women reportedly turned to several unhealthy methods of weight loss, including diet pills, diuretics, laxatives, vomiting and excessive exercise.

In an ABCNews.com story published two weeks ago, Judith Shaw chronicled her 15-year, mid-life battle with anorexia. When she finally checked herself into a residential treatment facility, she was a bit different than her fellow patients. At 53 among teens and 20-somethings, most of her peers could have been her children.

Whether there is more awareness and diagnoses remains unclear, but researchers said eating disorders can be ?common? among women over 50.

The triggers may be different among different age groups, but traumatic life events tend to trigger or contribute to eating disorders, no matter the age, according to experts at the National Eating Disorders Association. When an older person experiences the illness, it is usually because an earlier eating disorder has resurfaced, but not always. Disorders can be triggered by divorce, death of a loved one or children moving away.

?It can be hard to come forward because some older patients are concerned about the stigma of having a younger person?s disorder, but we know that eating disorders persist into older adulthood, eating disorders relapse during older adulthood and we know that late onset occurs, too,? said William Walters, helpline manager at NEDA.

?Late onset isn?t at all surprising,? he added. ?Midlife can be hard, and just as difficult a transition as the teens and early adulthood, in its own way.?

During midlife, children leave home, couples go through divorces, careers changes and bodies do, too.

?There is no break from our culture?s confusing messages regarding the overestimation of self-worth based on image,? said Walters.

While, on the surface, eating disorders are about food and weight, issues related to stress and trauma end up becoming controlled by the way people eat or look, experts say.

More than 10 million Americans suffer from bulimia, anorexia or other types of eating disorders, according to NEDA,? and millions more suffer from binge eating.

Older women often fly under the radar with their disorders, though. Doctors are much more apt to notice eating disorders in teens who have lost an excessive amount of weight. Also, if a young woman stops menstruating, a telltale sign of anorexia, a doctor will investigate further. Parents are usually involved with the feeding and care of teens, and because of that, family, friends and physicians are more likely to become skeptical of a change in eating and exercise habits.

If friends or family do suspect a person is suffering from an eating disorder, Sarah Parker, director of anxiety and eating disorders at the Reeds Treatment Center in New York, encouraged people to remember that the illness is an ?expression of pain.?

?Families and friends tend to say, ?You should eat more,? or, ?You need to exercise less,? but that can turn into a negative cycle very quickly,? Parker told ABCNews.com in June. ?Try to respond to the pain over the behavior by saying something like, ?It seems like you?re not doing very well, can we help you speak with a therapist or minister???

Eating disorders can be secretive, but they don?t have to be, said Walters.

?There are thousands of specialists throughout the country that provide thoughtful, patient and respectful caring for adults who are suffering with eating and body image issues,? he said. ?Our [NEDA] helpline can help patients find those specialists.?

    Indians complete sweep of Reds

    By TOM WITHERS

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 10:25 p.m. ET June 20, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - Swept in Cincinnati last week, the Indians came home and returned the favor.

Justin Masterson finished off the Reds - completely.

Masterson pitched a three-hitter for his first complete game this season and the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians capped off a three-game sweep with an 8-1 win Wednesday night.

Masterson (4-6) took a shutout into the eighth before the Reds ended the right-hander's streak of consecutive scoreless innings at 18. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine, including the side in the ninth, for his fourth career complete game. Cincinnati's only run was unearned.

"He was just terrific," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He pounded the strike zone with that heavy sinker. It was going down like a bowling ball."

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Johnny Damon hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning off Bronson Arroyo (3-5). Lonnie Chisenhall added three RBIs for the Indians, who played poorly while losing three in a row last week in southern Ohio, but have turned things around to move back atop their division.

"We're a resilient team," said Masterson, who became the first Cleveland pitcher to record a complete game at home since 2010. "I think we'll be able to carry this momentum on the road and have a lot of fun with it."

It was the first time the Reds and Indians had faced each other as first-place teams since 1999, and Masterson made sure Cleveland came out on top.

The Reds did not get a runner to second against Masterson until the eighth. Cabrera booted Jay Bruce's leadoff grounder to shortstop and Todd Frazier doubled with one out. Willie Harris followed with an RBI groundout, the first run given up by Masterson since June 9 in St. Louis - a career-best 18 innings.

Masterson capped the ninth by getting the dangerous Joey Votto to look at strike three, an exclamation point on his dominant performance.

"There was a little fire there," Masterson said. "I wanted to close it out."

Reds manager Dusty Baker knew Masterson was capable of shutting down his team.

"When he's on, he's very tough," Baker said, "and he was on tonight. His ball was moving everywhere."

Masterson's record may not show it, but he's been one of Cleveland's most consistent starters.

This was his fourth straight quality outing, and for a change, the Indians gave him some run support. He had received two or fewer runs in his previous eight starts and the Indians were averaging just 2.95 runs per nine innings for him, the worst support in the AL and fourth-lowest in the majors.

He was grateful for the runs, but was just as pleased for his teammates.

"It's nice for them, too," he said. "It makes them feel good. I think sometimes they wear themselves out when they're not scoring as many runs for me or anybody. It's nice to have a game where we score quite a few and win it easily."

Other than hitting Chris Heisey with a pitch in the first inning, Masterson was in complete control of the Reds.

He didn't give up a hit until the fourth when Heisey pulled a single down the third-base line past Jack Hannahan, who was playing up on the infield grass and couldn't reach it with a backhand dive. Votto singled in the seventh and Frazier's double were all Cincinnati could muster against Masterson.

"It was as good as it gets," Acta said.

Masterson got some defensive help when catcher Lou Marson gunned down Heisey in the fourth and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo raced back to snag Scott Rolen's drive in the fifth.

After letting Arroyo off the hook in the first three innings, the Indians tagged him for five runs in the fourth as Damon and Cabrera homered.

Damon, who came in batting just .190 but has been making contributions on and off the field, connected for his third homer to make it 2-0.

Casey Kotchman singled with one out before the 38-year-old Damon drove a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right. Damon, who missed all of training camp before signing with the Indians on April 17, has been showing signs of busting out of a prolonged slump. He's batting .295 (13 for 44) in his past 16 games.

"It's encouraging to see it." Acta said of Damon. "He got off to a very slow start and I know that a lot of people are going to keep looking at the batting average and stuff, but I can point out at least five games over the last 10 days where Johnny has had something to do with us winning the ballgame."

Chisenhall walked for the first time in 57 at-bats this season, and Choo drew a two-out walk to bring up Cabrera, whose two-run, walk-off homer against closer Aroldis Chapman won Tuesday's game. Cabrera fell behind 0-2 before hitting his eighth homer, a shot over the wall in right-center.

Arroyo was charged with five runs and eight hits in four innings - his shortest outing this season. The right-hander has just one win in his last eight starts.

The Indians went up 8-0 in the seventh when they loaded the bases off Alfredo Simon and Chisenhall laced a double into the right-field corner.

Notes: Votto has hit safely in nine straight games and 24 of 25. In that span, he's batting .484 (44 of 91) with six homers and 17 RBIs. ... Browns QB Brandon Weeden threw out the ceremonial first pitch. ... Reds 2B Brandon Phillips' hopes of being credited with an inside-the-park homer were denied by Major League Baseball. Phillips had appealed a ruling in Monday's game, when he was given an RBI double on a ball that skipped past left fielder Damon, who was charged with a two-base error. ... Indians DH Travis Hafner took batting practice the past two days and is moving toward a return from knee surgery. Hafner still needs to run and will likely go on a rehab assignment before being activated. ... Both teams are off Thursday. Chemical problem at pool sends dozens to hospital

By NBC New and News Services

INDIANAPOLIS -- Dozens of people at a crowded public swimming pool were sickened Thursday by an excessive amount of a water-purifying chemical in the pool, authorities said.?

The Garfield Aquatics Center was evacuated after a reported chemical spill.?

The chlorine-based purifying chemical, called "Magic Acid," caused nausea, coughing and watery eyes among the swimmers, many of them children, and 71 people were taken to hospitals, Todd Harper of the Indianapolis Emergency Services said.?

Twenty-one were taken by ambulance and another 50 by bus, NBC station WTHR reported.?

All were listed in fair condition, and none of the injuries were considered life-threatening, he said.

It's believed the chemicals were dumped into the water around 2 p.m.?

Marc Lotter, a spokesman for the mayor's office, said the incident was caused by a chemical imbalance in the pool. WTHR reported it's believed that a muriatic acid product reacted with a chlorine-like substance to treat the pool.?Officials are investigating whether or not a worker mixed the chemicals incorrectly.

The incident closed the center for the rest of the day.

Cheese awaits redesign -and maybe Facebook/Twitter support?

Cheese the webcam Gnome?s application that was written as part of Google?s 2007 Summer of Code lead by daniel g. siegel?and mentored by?Rapha?l Slinckx?is under a new design?development.

Yet another Gnome App that it might get cloud ?support?

Daily new socials, docs, chat, media sharing and other kind of services show up on Internet and it seems there is always space for them. However there isn?t space in our desktop to ?keep opened 10+ web-browsers for them. That is where Gnome Cloud Applications fit as they can manage multiple accounts from multiple services.

Cheese might be one of them! There is a discussion if Cheese should expand its sharing options to Twitter and Facebook. While these thoughts are still very early and we haven?t an implementation yet, none the less?reveal that Gnome targets Cloud in every aspect!

?Current?development targets to solve these issues:

    • Opens default photo viewer or video player in order to view photos and videos
    • Not possible to apply effects after a photo is taken or a video is recorded
    • It is not clear where Cheese is saving the photos and videos
    • It is not possible to set another default location for saving photos and videos
    • To save photos and videos in a different location, you have to right-click the image in the stream and click ?Save As?? (generate duplicates)
    • In the stream (context menu), the difference between ?Move to trash? and ?Delete? is not clear? (indeed, the keyboard shortcut to ?Edit > Move to Trash? is [Delete]
    • ?Share? opens a dialog called ?Send To??: Lack of consistency.
    • In the ?Sent To?? dialog, the ?Send as? and ?Send to? fields might be confusing
    • From the ?Send To?? dialog, it is possible to create CDs/DVDs and send files to disks. Since the dialog is opened when ?Share? is selected, these options seem a bit out of context.
    • It is hard to get out of fullscreen mode (you have to know the keyboard shortcut)
    • ?Edit > Move to Trash? is enabled when no photo/video is selected
    • ?Edit > Move All to Trash? is enabled when there are no photos/videos in the stream
    • Does not require confirmation when ?Edit > Move All to Trash? is selected
    • ?Edit > Effects? might be confusing
    • ?Edit > Effects? relate to effects that may be added before taking photos or recording videos. The rest of the options under ?Edit? are related to actions available after taking photos or recording videos. This might me confusing.
