Baseball Hall of Fame 2013: Dr. Frank Jobe, others honored

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.? Former major league pitcher Tommy John was on hand, appropriately enough, as Dr. Frank Jobe was honored at the baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Jobe was recognized for his impact on the sport. He developed the procedure known as Tommy John surgery when he fixed the left-hander's elbow in 1974.

A day before Hank O'Day, Jacob Ruppert and Deacon White were posthumously inducted into the shrine, Paul Hagen accepted the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing. Tom Cheek, the late Toronto announcer, was honored with the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting.

Also honored was Thomas Tull, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment and producer of the Jackie Robinson biopic "42."

"I can't believe I'm sitting here next to Tommy John and Dr. Frank Jobe," Tull said. "All these gentlemen have done for the game brought them to Cooperstown. I'm just thankful I'm here."

AGA Holds Annual Washington Fly-In For Internet Gambling | Online ...

July 28, 2013

aga-washington-fly-inOn Wednesday, the American Gaming Association (AGA) hosted its annual Gaming Industry Washington Fly-In event, in which high-ranking gaming execs hob-nob with federal politicians in a day-long effort to advance policies favorable to the industry. Among the notables gripping and grinning through this year?s junket were MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren, Caesars Entertainment CEO Gary Loveman, International Game Technology CEO Patti Hart, Penn National Gaming president Tim Wilmott and Aristocrat Leisure CEO Jamie Odell.

According to AGA president Geoff Freeman, among the message points these execs planned to push were the need for federal regulation of online poker coupled with an explicit ban on online ?casino games of chance,? a position the AGA has held for a couple years now. The big casino companies don?t mind opening up the online sphere to poker, but clearly don?t want to see anything threaten the number of bums in seats at the acres of slot machines in their brick-and-mortar venues.

The AGA?s political drive-by was also determined to further besmirch the reputations of so-called ?bad actors?, i.e. companies that had the idea of serving the US market before the US casino companies decided they wanted in on the online action themselves. Earlier this year, the AGA launched an unprecedented campaign to keep PokerStars out of New Jersey?s online gambling market, while ignoring misdeeds by other companies and individuals that have since struck deals with some AGA members.

Noticeably absent from this executive confab was Las Vegas Sands? boss Sheldon Adelson. This could be explained due to the fact that Adelson?s scathing opinion on the merits of any form of internet gambling are well established, but it?s equally true that Adelson doesn?t require any outside group to help him get the ear of Washington pols. Given his status as the Republican party?s single biggest campaign contributor, it?s safe to say that Adelson could undo the AGA?s group lobbying effort with a single phone call.

SHOCKER: HOUSE WANTS SHARE OF MEDIA SPOTLIGHT
The recent Senate hearing on internet gambling provided plenty of opportunity for the nation?s elected representatives to burnish their ?think of the children? credentials by routinely equating online gambling with terrorist money laundering activities. Indeed, even senators who couldn?t be arsed to attend the hearing were keen to hop on the anti-terror bandwagon, like Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.VA), who fought his way to the front of a recent media scrum to warn that online gambling could ?affect our national security? by making it ?easier for criminals and terrorists to launder money.?

kate-uptonRockefeller warned of the ?consequences of allowing a risky and often addictive form of entertainment to be available on such a ubiquitous platform.? Rockefeller said individual states had done a decent job regulating brick-and-mortar gaming, but ?the internet does not recognize borders or state jurisdictions.? Rockefeller apparently believes the internet does recognize the borders of the United States, or at least has difficulty swimming across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, or sled-dogging across the 49th parallel separating the US from Canada (where sleeper cells tend to freeze to death).

Feeling left out by all this Senate hubbub, Rep. Dina Titus (R-NV) wants the House of Representatives? Committee on Energy and Commerce to hold its own hearing on internet gambling. However, being from Nevada, Titus appears more concerned with protecting consumers from ?bad actors? than protecting them from Al Qaeda. Like the AGA, she warns about the apocalyptic ramifications of ?a confusing and complex patchwork of agreements and regulations.? Well, honestly? Who could feel threatened by terrorists bearing weapons of mass destruction when inferior state laws are on the books?

In case you weren?t aware, the chairman of the Energy and Commerce committee is Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), whose niece is none other than ?ber-babe Kate Upton (pictured right). So kindly accept this utterly gratuitous shot of Ms. Upton as your reward for reading this lengthy recitation of a collection of facts that really don?t matter a whole lot, since the state-level gambling ship has long since sailed, leaving all talk of federal online poker regulation as pointless as the parka Ms. Upton?s wearing in that 72? photo studio.

iPad Mini vs Nexus 7 2 comparison video anthology

ipad-mini-vs-nexus-7-2

The new Nexus 7 tablet has just been officially introduced, and the second-generation of this tablet is bound to find plenty of buyers in various regions worldwide. Any new smaller tablet device will always be compared to the iPad mini, so today we want to share with you an iPad Mini vs Nexus 7 2 comparison video anthology.

Before we detail the comparisons we?ll give you a quick rundown on specs of each so that you have an idea before you view the videos. The iPad mini released last November and is powered by a 1GHz Apple A5 dual-core processor with a 7.9-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD display offering resolution of 1024 x 768 and 162 ppi.

It has 512MB of RAM, and comes in 16, 32 or 64GB storage options (non-expandable). The iPad mini also has a 5-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, and runs iOS 6, upgradable to 6.1.3 with a planned upgrade to iOS 7.

Moving on to the Google Nexus 7 2 made by Asus, this has a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, and 7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD display with resolution of 1920 x 1200 and 323 ppi. It has 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of internal storage (non-expandable). The Nexus 7 2 has a 5-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, and it runs stock Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The cheapest iPad mini price is priced at $329 for the 16GB variety. The Nexus 7 will release at the end of this month in the US followed by other regions, and the 16GB version is $229.99 so there?s a substantial difference in pricing. Now we?ll move on to the selection of YouTube videos that we?ve embedded below this story.

The first is an 8-minute look at the Nexus 7 2 vs. iPad mini and gives a good roundup of details about these two tablets. It gives side-by-side specs and dimensions and weights as well, in a very clear comparison. The second video is a much briefer comparison of the new Nexus 7 2 vs iPad mini at just two-minutes long but power packs a lot into that time. It concludes with a look at the advantages of each tablet side-by-side and you can also vote on your preferred choice.

The third video is the Nexus 7 2nd Gen vs iPad mini and is basically a table of specs for easy comparison of one against the other. Specs of the new Nexus 7 tablet are clearly superior to the iPad mini, and at a far cheaper price it looks like a no-brainer. However, some people will choose depending on which operating system they prefer. We should also bear in mind that an iPad Mini 2 is expected to launch later this year that is likely to have improved specs at around the same price.

Please note that in the image below the new Nexus 7 is on the left with the iPad mini on the right. We?d really like to know what you think about the iPad mini vs. Nexus 7 2. Have you a clear choice of winner and if so, which one would you opt for? Let us know with your comments.

Biden: 'We don't know' if White House can help Detroit

By Roberta Rampton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House is looking for ways to help the city of Detroit after the city filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday, but Vice President Joe Biden said it was unclear what the administration could do.

"Can we help Detroit?" Biden said on Friday in a response to a question from a reporter. "We don't know."

Detroit, a former manufacturing powerhouse and cradle of the U.S. automotive industry, filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection on Thursday, making it the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

White House spokesman Jay Carey dismissed a question of whether there could be a government bailout for the city, but shed little light on other "policy options" under consideration.

"I would point you to what we have said and what leaders in Michigan and Detroit have said, which is that on the matter of their insolvency, that's something for the city and the creditors to resolve," he told reporters.

Top White House officials talking to the city and state have included Valerie Jarrett, Obama's senior adviser, Gene Sperling, the head of the National Economic Council, and Shaun Donovan, secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Carney said.

President Barack Obama made saving the automotive industry in Detroit a priority of his first term.

"We're concerned, obviously, about the citizens of Detroit and of the state, and continuing to assist Detroit in moving forward," Carney said.

Democrats mum on San Diego mayor's treatment of women: Opinion

According to colleagues, constituents, employees, and his ex-fianc?e, San Diego's Democrat Mayor Bob Filner is a threat to women. He has been accused of "forcibly kissing" them, groping them, and propositioning them. Former Councilwoman Donna Frye put it bluntly: "Bob Filner is tragically unsafe for any woman to approach."

But Filner won't resign -- despite the flood of allegations against him. Top Democrat leaders have yet to denounce his harassment habits. And, most appallingly and hypocritically, top Democrat women have remained silent.

Where's Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz? Where's Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a fellow Californian, who served with Filner for two decades in the House of Representatives? And where are California's senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein?

This man is accused of physically attacking women -- and not one of these leaders has stood up on their side.

City Hall employees have described "The Filner Headlock" -- his habit of wrapping his arm around the necks of female employees. And to avoid his sexual advances they have resorted to what they've dubbed "The Filner Dance" -- their practice of ducking and dodging the handsy septuagenarian.

One constituent described the mayor putting his hand in her bra. Another said that during a meeting

with Filner, he told a staffer to leave the room and then tried to kiss her against her will.

Last week, Filner admitted, "I need help," though he insists he's innocent of sexual harassment. He did say, however, that he was "embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and at times I have intimidated."

Even if we were to give him the benefit of the doubt about the sexual harassment charges, he has still admitted to discriminating against the women in City Hall and treating them unfairly. That alone should make him unfit to serve the people of San Diego.

Sadly, the litany of charges paints a much more disturbing picture. To say he "failed to fully respect" seems to be an insidious understatement. Nevertheless, Wasserman Schultz, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein and company remain conspicuously silent. These women are doing their own version of the "Filner Dance," desperately trying to avoid the issue, more concerned about their party's image than protecting women.

If Filner has been watching what's played out on the other side of the country in New York City lately, it's no wonder he thinks his party doesn't really care about these allegations. Democrats have embraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner and former Gov. Eliot Spitzer as though they never did anything wrong.

In the Democrat Party, misogyny has become acceptable so long as the guilty party is a Democrat. So if Democrat women want to talk about a "war on women," let's talk about their fellow partisans first -- and not their hackneyed shallow attacks. Sexual harassment isn't something to be taken lightly. But until these Democrat women call for Filner's resignation, they are doing just that: not giving the serious charges against him the attention they warrant.

I have to wonder: In the Filner-Spitzer-Weiner Party, where do women draw the line?

If Bob Filner stays in office, he won't just be a stain on the Democrat Party; he will demean the office he holds and make a mockery of public service.

The mayor has asked his constituents for patience as he begins "to work with professionals in sexual harassment training." He clearly needs help and plenty of training, but City Hall is no self-help group. The mayor has a serious problem -- possibly a criminal problem -- and should leave office.

The people of San Diego owe him no patience. Nor should women have any patience with the Democrat leaders who are failing them with their silence. They deserve better than Bob Filner, and they deserve better than leaders who won't stand up when it really matters.

Sharon Day is a co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
