The Todd Beamer Titans have a formula for winning baseball games this season and it is pretty simple ? pitch and play defense.
That formula has been working pretty well in the early season. The Titans moved to 5-1 on the year with a methodical 8-1 win over Federal Way Tuesday afternoon at home.
Beamer jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after the first two innings and senior Brett Oyer allowed only five hits? on the mound. The Titans also got a two-run, home run from Sam Kosbab and Lawyer Braun finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs and a double.
Darrien Moran took the loss on the mound for the Eagles (3-2), but also gave up only five hits. Moran was also 1 for 3 with a double at the plate.
Oyer's win over Federal Way continued an unbelievable pitching performance for the Titans. In their six games this season, the Beamer pitching staff has given up a grand total of three runs and have four shutouts.
The Titans suffered their only loss of the season Thursday to the No. 1-ranked Puyallup Vikings, 2-0. Beamer only had one hit against Matt Becker, who struck out 11.
But the Titans bounced back Friday with a 6-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin. University of Washington-signee Matt Bower got the win on the mound in four innings of work. Kosab finished 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Richard Apigo and Daniel Lee both had two hits and an RBI.
Decatur ? The Gators picked up their first win of the season Tuesday, 11-2 over Lakes. Janson Junk threw a complete gave, giving up just three hits and striking out eight.
Offensively, Brett Johnson and Brandon Zimmerman each finished with three RBIs and a double. Jason Wiley was 2 for 3 with a double.
Thursday, Decatur (1-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in a non-league game against Sumner, but the Spartans tallied the final nine runs to win, 9-5.
Zimmerman finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Gators.
The Gators also lost to Enumclaw Friday in five innings, 11-0, after Bryce Peterson threw a no-hitter and struck out six.
Jefferson ? Steven Sonnenfeld finished 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs during the Raiders' 8-4 win over Kentridge Friday. Jordan Barrett got the win on the mound by throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing only four hits. Hunter Henry was 2 for 3 at the plate.
Jefferson (3-1) also beat Kentlake, 5-4, on Thursday after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sonnenfeld was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and Nico Delacruz was 2 for 4 with two runs and a double. Peter Bennett got the win on the mound.
Track
Federal Way ? The Eagles swept Auburn Thursday in SPSL Central action. The boys won 104-37 and the girls won 93-57.
On the boys' side, Federal Way got wins from D.J. May in the 100 (11.29), Mike Tate in the 200 (23.01) and long jump (21-2.25), Esekiel McNeal in the 400 (51.98), Mitch Stewart in the 800 (2:05.14) and 1,600 (4:28.14), Aaron Persinger in the 110 hurdles (15.84) and 300 hurdles (40.88), Jordan Pulu in the shot put (53-7) and D'Londo Tucker in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-11).
On the girls' side, the Eagles got wins from Karis Cameron in the 100 (13.58) and long jump (15-2.25), Mariyah Vongsaveng in the 400 (1:05.83), Khiana Duncan in the 3,200 (12:38.08), Luaipou Lologo in the shot put (29-10.25), javelin (94-4) and discus (102-4) and Dyesha Belhumeur in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (32-8.75).
Decatur ? Drew Thompson won a pair of individual titles at the Terrace Relays Saturday at Mountlake Terrace High School. The senior won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.82 and the high jump (6-2).
On the girls' side, Victoria Braun took home the pole vault title with a leap of 8-2.
Tennis
Jefferson ? The Raiders won the four-team Thomas Jefferson Invitational Saturday at TJ. The Raiders tallied 11 points to outdistance Kentridge (5), South Kitsap (5) and Bonney Lake (3).
Michelle Lee won the Flight 2 singles title with a three-set win over South Kitsap's Kylie Thomas, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. In doubles' action, Rileigh Qualls and Toni Mullen won the Flight 2 title with a three-set win and Coco Hernandez-Tagoe and Gloria Oh won the Flight 3 title in straight sets.
The Raiders also won 5-0 over Curtis Thursday and 3-2 over Beamer on Friday.
Against Beamer, TJ's wins came from Cindy Park at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, Lee at No. 2, 6-0, 7-5, and Breanna Ziccarelli and Krista Nakamura at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-4. The Titans' wins came from Jenny Hoefel and Taylor Lunka at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Tori Kaufman and Lindsey Tyson at No. 3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Softball
Jefferson ? After scoring four runs in the bottom of the second, the Raiders (2-2) eventually lost 12-4 to Kentlake Thursday. Alyssa Keyes finished 2 for 4 at the plate.
Jefferson responded with a 13-4 win over Kentridge Friday. Lexi Goranson and Katie Jackson both had three hits and Keyes had a pair of RBIs and a double. Rocky Hale got the win on the mound.
Beamer ? The Titans (2-1) beat up Graham-Kapowsin, 15-0, Friday thanks to a shutout from Madison Rogers. Kelsey McDonnell finished 2 for 2 with three runs and three stolen bases and Amalee Scott scored two runs and stole four bases.
Soccer
Beamer ? The Titans (2-3-0) split a pair of games Thursday and Saturday in SPSL South action. Beamer lost to Emerald Ridge, 3-1, but bounced back with an 8-0 win over Bethel Saturday.
Against Bethel, the Titans got two goals each from Keaton House, Hassani Dotson and Ang Ta and single goals from Udenze Okoli and Jake Gregg. Deshar House earned the shutout in net.
Federal Way ? The Eagles (3-0-0) bulldozed Graham-Kapowsin Thursday, 6-0. Federal Way got two goals each from Luis Sanchez and Sean Rigney and single goals from Sean Tang and Colin Kim. Ben Willis pitched the shutout in goal.
Jefferson ? The Raiders (2-0-1) got goals from Tyler Hamashima and Louis Alvaro Osornio, as well as an own goal to beat Mount Rainier, 3-1, Thursday.
