Izard named Screaming Eagles new assistant coach

SYDNEY ? Montreal native Henri Izard is the new assistant coach of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the team announced on Friday.

The 45-year-old Izard takes over the position previously held by former assistant Jean-Francois David. David decided not to return to the Screaming Eagles bench next season to be closer to his family. Izard, who will work with the team?s defencemen, was one of 22 candidates who applied for the job.

?He?s a leader and he?s got experience,? said Screaming Eagles head coach and general manager Marc-Andr? Dumont. ?He?s been coaching for 20 years and he?s a teacher. He knows the junior age group because that?s what he?s coached and he teaches in C?gep, which is exactly our age group.

?We had some very good candidates. We had candidates from all over North America, from several provinces in Canada and we had some coaches who coached in the NCAA in the United States who applied for the job. It wasn?t an easy task to select who to interview and who we would choose.?

Izard has spent the last three seasons as an associate coach at St. Lawrence College in Quebec City, where the team won the league championship the past three seasons. He also coached the C?gep Saint-Laurent Patriotes and has coached midget ?AAA? and junior ?AAA? levels in Quebec. Izard also scouted for the McGill Redmen. He has playing experience in junior ?A? and major college hockey in Quebec.

Izard is taking a leave of absence from a teaching position at C?gep de Sainte-Foy in Sainte-Foy, Que., to join the Screaming Eagles. Before teaching, he earned a physical education degree with a specialization in hockey at the Universit? de Montreal.

Dumont said Izard signed a one-year contract because he can only take a leave of absence from teaching for one year at a time, but he does want to stay on for longer. Izard is married and has three children.

?I am excited to join a first-class organization like the Screaming Eagles,? said Izard in a release. ?I look forward to contributing to the development of the players and the team and continue growing as a coach. It is very motivating to be joining an up and coming young group of players and I can?t wait to get started in August.?

Izard could not be immediately reached for comment on Friday.
